Mayor Pougnet has announced that Port Lawrence, the big mixed use development at Palm Canyon/Indian Canyon @ Alejo, will not go forward due to financing issues. This is a huge disappointment for our downtown and Palm Springs as a whole. It's especially disturbing given that the Palm Springs City Council approved demolishing all the buildings that were there before. The buildings housed viable businesses that are no longer there. What a shame! We all know that the credit crisis has taken out a lot of big players, but the city should not have allowed demolishing of the existing buildings until the developer's credit was secure Pictures are here to remind you what we have lost. Instead of emulating Santa Barbara and Carmel which preserves its architectural heritage, Palm Springs tears down its most interesting buildings and replaces them with nondescript buildings that you can see in Orange County and now empty lots. The whole thing is a crime.
I'm so discouraged by all of this. I thought some good would come to PS with the development of Port Lawrence, Hard Rock Hotel, and the Mondrian Hotel. Once these developments took place I really believed the renaissance of the desert would take place--the new rat pack would be spending their free time back in Palm Springs. It would be the classy Vegas and our real estate would once again thrive. I only pray there's hope in the horizon. A parking lot only breeds failure to a town that was once so amazing and world famous.
Please! Someone come to the rescue!
Who's allowing all of this to happen? It seems as if they're almost attempting to sabotage this great town of ours. If you're going to create change, then do it. Don't start then stop.
Who did we elect to turn this city back into what it used to be? Yeah, you! You said you were going to bring about a renaissance in the great city of Palm Springs. So DO IT!

such a shame. PS would have thrived during these down times had these establishments been built.
Somebody in office help Hard Rock. Help Port Lawrence. Because they'll help Palm Springs ten fold.
